Make an Automated Configuration and Uninstall - Mikrotik Script

The Explanation This exercise will attempt to explain how one can create an automated script to administrate a large deployment base. By consolidating on a homogeneous configuration it becomes easier to enact changes to your routers without having to manually configure every router. This also makes it easy to restore a router to it's default configuration by flipping the 'deconf' bit and running the uninstall script. Once that is finished you can flip the 'deconf' bit again to reinstall the router's base configuration. I have found this to be especially helpful when developing new installations, allowing me to tinker with the settings and if I mess up reset the router without having to reboot. --Canniscam 23:23, 13 November 2008 (EET) The Breakdown Variables: To :global or not to :global :global - Global variables should be used sparingly, the most prevalent use for a :global declarations is to pass information between scripts. The :global variables are persistent in memory between script executions. Since the MikroTik lacks the ability to pass command line arguments at run time, you can use :global variables to replicate this functionality. -- Remember to Clean Up After Yourself: Make sure you :set a :global variable to null once you no longer need the data, otherwise you might be in for a surprise later in your script. :local -- Local variables are scope specific, which is to say that they only have meaning inside of the current statement, and will not persist in memory between script executions, nor will they persist between routines. Some statements in the MikroTik scripting language can support local variable creation on the fly. (i.e. :foreach, :while, :for, etc.) We will look at this in depth later on in this article so just keep it in mind for now. When building your own configuration skeleton you need to decide on which settings you want to store as variable or dynamic information. Some common variables might include Host-Name, IP Address, SNMP Community Info. Study the snippet below and look at what types of variables have been declared, and how they have been initialized. Take note that most of the variables in this script have been set as :local declarations, try to understand why. Heads Up! This script has be programmed to self destruct... Just kidding, but in a way it is also true, as mentioned in the title and the first section this script can be configured to either install a base configuration or uninstall a base configuration. All that magic starts on Line 2 as a :local variable. I treat this as more of an argument than a reusable variable. Since this is a common variable in most of my scripts I take extra care to set it as a :local variable in order to not disrupt my other scripts. There are several instances where this could be used as a global variable, and I have used it that way in the past to several uninstall scripts together, and executing a single script that launches all the rest. You may ask why I decided to break the LAN IP address up into separate octets when it would be more efficient to use one string variable of type :toip. I decided against the single string declaration because in my network the octets of the IP help us identify an IP enabled device in our network. So I have started writing an uninstall method into all of my configuration scripts. This allows you to customize the level of destructiveness. For instance you could remove all settings except the settings of a radio card and it's corresponding IP address. Maybe you are agoraphobic and really want maintain your router without having to experience that panic of backup jitters. Whatever the case may be, the best option is to come design your own uninstall script that will become part of your consolidated configuration base. This script contains an example of an uninstall script that can be expanded upon or customized to do what ever you require. Challenge: Study the MikroTik RoS Scripting Guide and learn how to add an audible warning element to this uninstall script, execute the audible warning for each of the last 5 seconds, and make each warning more noticeable than the last.
